Case Study: Institute of Physics Publishing - Workplace Experience Evaluation project

The Institute of Physics Publishing moved into a very well designed and equipped office over 1.5 floors at the Distillery in central Bristol in Oct 2022. The design was based on consultancy and engagement we carried out in 2021, together with Interaction, Strategic Workplace Design & Build Experts who created the fantastic new office.

The challenge.

IOPP employees were used to fairly traditional ways of working in their previous office. They had recently introduced ‘fully flexible hybrid’ ways of working as well as a new employee proposition. Engagement and guidance was required to review progress and ensure the physical and virtual workplaces supported employees, teams and the wider organization. The main focus was on connection, culture, knowledge transfer and team dynamics.

What we did.

We carried out a post occupation evaluation as well as review of the organisation’s workplace experience across all global offices. This included: all employee survey; observational studies at Bristol HQ; analysis of building entry data and booking and utilisation data; review of space plans; and senior leadership engagement.

The project included:

  • Global employee survey

  • Space plans - review and updates

  • Analysis of building entry, booking & utilisation data

  • Senior leadership engagement

The result.

We shared findings with senior leadership and all employees. We made recommendations and action plan for behavioural improvements to ways of working and workplace culture, as well as practical recommendations for minor changes to physical workplace. The Workplace Experience Team and People Teams are currently applying these changes across the workplace ecosystem. Their employees feel listened to and managers feel empowered.
